The Gift of Water”

“Water is a source of life”, messaged of Mr. Rolando B. Victoria, Executive Director of ASKI during the inauguration of San Isidro Water System at Brgy. San Isidro, Laur, Nueva Ecija on February 11, 2010. In many communities that ASKIs is serving, the unavailability or lack of safe, clean water is a common predicament and is a major cause of health and sickness problems for residents. ASKI meets this need by drilling wells that provide fresh, potable water and one of those communities is Brgy. San Isidro, Laur, Nueva Ecija. Barangay San Isidro is located in a mountainous terrain of Laur, Nueva Ecija with total land area of 4,200 hectares. It is composed of 15 sitios, Centro 1, 2, 3, and 4, Pantoc, Burac, Palanas, Bayog, Casareal, Labni, Manganese, Mainit, Katalbakan and Binalayan with a total population of 3,081. Limited source and unavailability of clean and safe water is the main issue in the community. According to the residents, installation of potable water will cost 60,000.00 because the level of water basin is too deep. The Provincial Government provided 1 unit of wind mill but unfortunately, it was not functioning because the location was not windy.

Due to unavailability of source of safe and clean water, these residents would walk and used tricycle for kilometers and others were crossing river just to get water that is not even safe for drinking. They were also dependent on the spring coming from the mountain which is delicate to drink due to possibility of contamination and sometimes they also experienced collecting rainwater from their roof gutters just to satisfy their needs. According to Brgy. Captain Morales, “35% of residents suffered from pandemic illness like diarrhea, skin diseases and dehydration brought by drinking unsafe water that attacked the community especially children but because of the project, it lessen and avoid illnesses from drinking unsafe water. The dream of having potable water for the residents was made possible thru ASKI.” Brgy. Councilor Reynaldo Mercado also mentioned the support of ASKI during inauguration, “before I used to hired person just to get water for me and pay him 25.00. I’m doing such twice a week and if I compute it, it cost 350.00 a month which is bigger compare to my monthly bill right now which is 100.00 only. Aside from the savings, it also lessens too much time and effort in getting water”. “We are great and fortunate that ASKI provided us this kind of project that is very helpful”, Ate Diona, one of the beneficiaries of the project also mentioned the help of the project, “before I used to walk 1 kilometer to carry two galloons on my hands and sometimes used our tricycle which consumed 50 pesos of diesel every week and it cost 200.00 per month. Aside from these, the project also lightens my household activities because the water is just on my house, while getting water I can do also other household chores like washing, cooking, cleaning and others”.

Water System is located in Sitio Centro which is operated and managed by Inter Barangay Association while the other one is located at Sitio Pantoc, managed by Empowered Youth Bringing Change and Development (EYBCD) an organization of youth both organized by ASKI. Sitio Centro Water system started its operation last July 2009 while Sitio Pantoc Water System started on November 2009. As of present, the water of life is continuously running to the household of 64 beneficiaries and they were grateful to ASKI and showed their appreciation during ASKI’s turnover and dedication ceremony which was facilitated by Bro.
