S’pore OFWs finish financial education, entrepreneurship courses

More than 130 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) including some foreign nationals have recently received their certificates of completion for the 11-week basic entrepreneurship and five-week financial education courses from ASKI Global Limited in partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS), recently. ASKI Global Limited, one of the mutually reinforcing institutions of Alalay Sa Kaunlaran Inc. (ASKI), a global development organization spearheaded the offering of the courses to Filipinos and other nationalities in partnership with NUS- Chua Thian Poh Community Leadership Center. The financial education course aims to equip overseas workers the knowledge about finances, uses of money, importance of saving and investing and capability to make informed decision on finance. The expected result is a change in remittance behavior where workers would decide to direct the use of their remittances for a more productive use. On the other hand, the basic entrepreneurship course is aimed at changing the migrant workers’ mindset so they become entrepreneurial and start putting up small businesses to be managed by their families, while working overseas It is envisioned that this developmental effort will fast track reunification of overseas workers with their families. The Metrobank Foundation sponsored a scholarship on financial education for the OFWs in Singapore. This is part of the B2B (back to back) Financial Education Program for 57 overseas Filipino workers through ASKI Global Limited and their respective families through ASKI Philippines. Irma L. Cosico, chief operations officer of ASKI Global Limited said, “the organization has been in operation for the last 18 months. During the period, ASKI Global has produced 301 graduates in three batches.”

“We were able to produce budding entrepreneurs. Many of them started putting up their respective businesses in the Philippines. The second batch of graduates has resolved to become OFIs or overseas Filipino investors, not just OFWs. In the third batch, ASKI Global witnessed the increase in the FEW- financially empowered women and men. We are changing the face of the OFWs " they have become fearlessly entrepreneurial and family engaged,” Cosico added. “Most of the graduates would like to start their business very soon. They want to do this for the love of their families. Most of them already started savings not only in the piggy banks but also in the banks in the Philippines and here in Singapore,” Cosico said. Meanwhile, Rolando B. Victoria, executive director of ASKI and chair of ASKI Global Ltd., shared the other programs of ASKI aimed at helping them and their families in their respective provinces. “We keep dreaming of big dreams. Our efforts are geared towards the realization of your vision. We want to impart to you how you can best use of your hard-earned money. ASKI will always be part of your dreams,” Victoria said. Nathaniel Imperial, consul general of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore served as the keynote speaker representing Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Minda C. Cruz. In his message, Imperial lauded the efforts of the organization for holding such activity for the Filipinos. “What ASKI program sets apart from other skills training programs is because its social entrepreneurship curriculum and programs are conceptualized and taught by professionals, practitioners and volunteers and they provide the entire ecosystem for micro-entrepreneurs to start a business and who are willing to succeed,” Imperial said.

According to Imperial, the graduates have made the right decision in enrolling and completing their respective courses. “Instead of spending your time and resources on things that do not always last, you have invested in yourselves and in upgrading your capabilities to better prepare you for future challenges,” he said. Aside from the certificates there were also special awards given like Excellent Business Plans, Entrepreneur Award, and Most Outstanding Student. With this program, it is expected that there will be more enterprises established through the remittances, increased in savings and a fast-tracked reunification of the OFWs with their respective families.
